My Football Journey

Having been in and around football from a very young age and working with young players from 12-18 in professional academies over the past 15 years, I believe I have a firm understanding what is needed both on and off the pitch for young players.

I have worked in Academy football at Manchester United,Rochdale and Oldham Athletic, but I also played at these clubs, being at Oldham Athletic Academy before signing for Manchester United where I stayed until I was 19.

Experiencing what it is like to be a young player at a professional club and then being released was an experience that has shaped me as a person. I played semi-professional and the non-league environment, but having always been in pro football, I struggled to adapt and my confidence fell which took me out of football all together. These experiences gave me a great understanding of what young players go through and how support off the pitch is vital. I believe this is a key quality that I bring to my coaching due to the experiences that I have had, I carry a holistic approach along with exceptional tactical and technical understanding.

I began my journey with Manchester United in 1988 and became an apprentice in 1991. I played for the A/B and Youth Teams, and was part of the now famous “class of ‘92”, progressing to a full professional in 1993.

After leaving full time football in 1994, I remained in sport working in school delivering sports along with working with vulnerable children in care homes. Years following I ran a successful company for almost 20 years before returning to football. To this day my passions are property and working with players.

The experiences that I have had provide me with insight and knowledge that very few other people can reflect upon. Not only did I play and earn my skill among some amazing players when at Manchester United, I did so with some of the greatest coaches. Because of this, I can provide invaluable knowledge and teaching to the children that I coach, and I incorporate this daily – on both a positive and negative side; being able to provide potential future professionals with a knowledge of how to succeed and stay grounded, and also how to react and grow as a player when there are physical and mental struggles.

A few other notable points are that I continued to play semi-professional football until 2003 which gives me great experience in the diversity of football, and the challenges that can come of playing within lower leagues and for teams that aren't as prestigious as Manchester United.

During my time as a coach at Manchester United I have been fortunate to work with and support current young players who have gone on to play internationally, and in the first team at Manchester United and other premier league clubs, please see my testimonials page for some insight into the experience of people that have worked with me.
